TARU was established in 1990 when a group of individuals
decided to bring their trans-disciplinary expertise to
engage with India’s development challenges.
A notable assignment TARU undertook in its early years was the development of Technology Action Plans (TAPs) for Rural Housing for 14 Indian States. The country-wide exposure to issues around access to services, household investment determinants and institutional response systems this provided was the best foundation this fledgling firm could have had.
The association with the GoI also paved the way for our initial work on disasters- the post-earthquake reconstruction in Uttarkashi (1991) and Marathwada (1993). Since then, TARU has responded to every major disaster event India has seen. Insights from two decades of disaster-related work now inform our growing Climate Change work and are reflected in the recent, much acclaimed risk assessment and mitigation planning in Gujarat.
Among our more influential work is the Country, State and Sector Strategy Development for multilateral and bilateral Development Partners and the design and management of programmes and reform initiatives they support. Though the beginnings of our engagement with Development Partners were small, these have, in time, besides work of strategic import, led to RWSS Sector tasks in 18 States; Urban Sector tasks in 30 major urban centers, including 15 million-plus cities; and, assessments of several high-profile public programmes.
Much has changed since we started. India has witnessed unprecedented economic growth, reforms in several key sectors and sharp attitudinal and lifestyle changes. Society is in churn and a fresh set of challenges around economy, environment and security have emerged.
We, at TARU, have consistently adapted to anticipate, and respond to, the changing India. What we have maintained though is our passion to provide clients the best advice.
